摘要
蔡元培是中国文化教育由传统走向近代化的导引者。他在19世纪末20世纪初东西方文化的冲突中,既反对盲目排外,也反对全盘西化,提出“融汇中西”、建设中国新文化的中西文化观,体现了一代文化大师特有的博大胸怀;他在主持全国教育工作特别是出任北京大学校长期间,力排顽固,坚持“思想自由”、“兼容并包”的办学方针,将西方近代教育理念成功引入中国高等教育领域内。蔡元培“以一身兼东西文化之长”,其“迹近完人”的高尚道德情操,尤足令后世敬仰。他留下的大量著述,是一份不可多得的宝贵财富,值得我们认真地整理、开发和利用。
Cai Yuanpei is a leader in the transition of Chinese Culture and education from tradition to modernization. In the confrlict of the eastern and western cultures during the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century,he was against both blind opposition to everything foreign and wholesale western zation and suggested 'Compromising Chinese and western cultures to build a new cultural view , which reflected his peculiar broad mind as a great culture master of the time. When he was in charge of China' s education, especially when he was the president of Beijing University, he insisted on the principle of 'freedom of thought' and 'embracing all to run the university regardless of all objections, and successfully introduced the modern western educational idea into China's higher education. Cai Yuanpei deserves reverence from later generations for his mastering the strong points of eastern and western cultures and his noble morality and values. The large number of his books are a rare valuable wealth and worth our serious systematization,development and exploitation.
