To investigate the contamination characteristics and spatial distribution patterns of heavy metals in soil at a historically industrial site, focused on a former steel plant area and its surroundings in Shanghai.,35 monitoring points were established, and 140 soil samples were collected to analyze eight heavy metals. Results showed that all 8 heavy metals were detected, with As,Ni and Co as characteristic pollutants. In the surface soil of the industrial zone, their exceedance rates were 13.3%,33.3%and 66.7%respectively.Co was the most prominent pollutant(maximum exceedance multiple of 5.0,Nemerow comprehensive pollution index reached heavily polluted level).Spatially, contamination exhibited a"core-transition-periphery"gradient pattern, with strong"surface accumulation"vertically.Correlation analysis indicated As,Ni,Co,etc, mainly originated from steel production activities, while Cd had an independent source.
