In response to the slowdown in growth, intensified competition, and environmental pressure in the papermaking industry, modern large-scale chemical pulp mills are expanding from traditional pulp production for papermaking to higher-value cellulose products.Currently, most high-value cellulose products rely on imports from abroad and there is an urgent need for domestic production, making the necessity of the industry’s expansion towards higher-value cellulose products particularly prominent. This article systematically reviewed the four key paths to achieving this transformation:Develop high-purity dissolving pulp as raw materials for textiles and chemicals, and expand its emerging applications in energy, medical care, and other fields;Develop specialty cellulose that maintain fiber structure(such as fluff pulp and filter materials)to replace petrochemical products;Develop micro/nano cellulose with excellent performance;Utilize the by-products from pulping to produce bio-based materials. The production technology and application status of these key products such as dissolving pulp and special cellulose-based materials were analyzed. The significance of transformation was pointed out,and the future industrial upgrading achieved through green technology adoption and product innovation was described.
