As one of the most prevalent paradigms of medieval world maps, climatemaps, otherwise known as zonal maps, are deeply rooted in the humanistic traditionsfromlate antiquity tothe Middle Ages.Their narrative framework relies more on book knowledge than on field surveys, while their cartographic logic is grounded in cosmology rather than in geographical reality. These maps are also known as“Macrobian maps”due to their affinity to Commentary on the Dream of Scipioby Macrobius. This paper analyzes the projective, iconographic, inscriptional, and narrative features of a representative set of climate maps, while tracing a series of geographic, philosophical, and literary texts from the classical to the medieval periods that underpin their cartographic reasoning, including works by Plato,Cicero,Manilius,Macrobius and Chaucer. The study seeks to illuminate the humanistic cartographic consciousness embedded in these maps, and explore the relationship between climate maps and the more typical medieval mappaemundi.
