摘要
本文以罗兰·巴特的“两级符号系统”为方法论,聚焦敦煌莫高窟第428窟南壁“卢舍那法界人中像”,解析其符号意义。通过一级系统(语言系统)“能指-所指-符号”结构,拆解“十道众生”各道的形象表征与宗教文化指示;二级系统(神话系统)以一级符号为能指,推演意识形态层面的文化内涵,如修行解脱、社会秩序、因果报应等。研究揭示了壁画中人与自然相处、现实冲突等深层意义,验证了巴特符号学理论的解释力,为敦煌壁画符号研究及中国符号学发展提供了新视角。
Using Roland Barthes’“two-level signifying system”as its methodology,this paper focuses on the Luoshana Dharmadhatu human-image on the south wall of Cave 428 at Dunhuang’s Mogao Grottoes and decodes its symbolic meaning.At the first level—the linguistic system—the chain“signifier-signified-sign”is used to deconstruct the visual representations of“sentient beings of the ten paths”and their associated religious-cultural referents.At the second level—the mythical system—the sign produced at the first level functions as a new signifier,allowing the inference of ideological meanings such as liberation through cultivation,social order,and karmic retribution.The study reveals the mural’s deeper meanings,such as humanity’s relationship with nature and real-world conflicts,and thereby confirms the explanatory power of Barthesian semiotics,offering a fresh perspective for Dunhuang mural research and the development of Chinese semiotics.
