In recent years, the development of nucleic acid testing(NAT)have significantly reduced the risk of hepatitis B virus(HBV)transmission through blood transfusion. However,a residual risk persists.Occult hepatitis B virus infection(OBI),identified during blood donor screening, has become a growing concern for transfusion safety. This review summarizes the epidemiological characteristics, infection mechanism, traditional and novel diagnostic markers, risk factors for transfusion transmission, and assessments of residual risk of OBI,in order to provide reference for improving the quality of blood screening, reducing the risk of HBV transfusion transmission and ensuring the blood safety of blood donors.
