In 2024,Gao Yuan,a senior media type, following his book“Guarding Life and Death”,released his second full-length novel,Normandie Apartments, which takes the landmark of Shanghai,Wukang Building,as its geographical background and tells a modern allegory of the French Concession in Shanghai from the 1930s to the 1940s.The novel regards the apartment as a material symbol of the modern living paradigm, reflecting the spatial logic of capitalist production.Through the eyes of children and gatekeepers,it ingeniously employs the aesthetics of“alienation”inthe narration of the complex connections among colonial modernity, class division and historical violence.Gao Yuan presents the symbiotic nature of the wartime community with the storyline of“love”,and also the Bohemian spirit of Shanghai beneath the bourgeois shell, expressing the melancholy of the“heroes”in the concessions as“rootless”.The flowing mirror image of the Shanghai spirit has been depicted in the rift between colonial modernity and national narrative.
