On December 16,1920,a great earthquake of magnitude of 8.5 occurred in Haiyuan. The felt radius of the shock was over 1,800 kilometers. Its pleistoseismic zone was located in Haiyuan,Ningsia Province. The surface fault caused by the earthquake was more than 200 kilometers in length. This paper gives an account of and discusses the macroscopic phenomena during the earthquake, the foreshock and aftershock activities, the geological conditions for the formation of the earthquake, the characteristics of the activities of the earthquakes in history with regard to time and space in the areas around the epiccntral region, some precursory phenomena of the great earthquake, and finally the external triggering conditions and epiccntral migration after the occurrence of the earthquake. It is pointed out in this paper that the energy of the great earthquake was supplied by the relative movement of the three great tectonic masses in West China which are different in geological features. This great earthquake had precursors before its occurrence. The activities of the moderate earthquakes around the epicentral region before and after the great earthquake seemed to have certain regularities with respect to time and space.
