Classical melancholy narratives originated from Qu Yuan“venting emotions through indignation”in Lisao, which interweaves individual sorrow with collective concerns for national survival and temporal cycles, forming a public-oriented“collective anxiety”,while Dream of the Red Chamber focuses on“individual sorrow”,reflecting profound insights into life’s impermanence and illusory fate through the tragic love story of Baoyu and Daiyu,as well as the ups and downs of the clan. The evolution of melancholy narratives in Chinese classical literature highlights its dual dimensions:the interplay of collective anxiety and individual sorrow, alongside the integration of Confucian“Golden Mean”and Buddhist-Daoist“extrication”.These narratives are deeply intertwined with political ethics and collective destiny. The study of melancholy narratives provides fresh perspectives for interpreting traditional literature and culture and mirrors humanity’s primal pursuit of meaning in life and emotion.
