摘要
作为第一个涉足中国内地的基督新教传教士,马礼逊对中国文学的认知和解读无疑具有开创性的意义。对于中国文学,马礼逊的论述散见于伦敦大学所藏《马礼逊手稿书目》(SOAS MS 80823)对中国小说标注的内容简评、《中国杂记》论及的中国文学文类特征等处。本文借助相关史料,分析马礼逊中国文学观念的产生机制,认为其一方面受基督教的伦理观念的制约,偏好中国文学作品中崇尚道德之作;另一方面带有强烈的实用色彩,《圣经》翻译和传教的需要导致他对以《三国演义》为代表的历史小说的喜好,以及对中国诗歌和戏剧作品的相对冷落。
As the first Protestant missionary to set foot on Chinese mainland,Robert Morrison’s cognition and interpretation of Chinese literature is undoubtedly groundbreaking.In the realm of Chinese literature,Morrison’s discussions are scattered throughout the Morrison’s Manuscript Catalogue(SOAS MS 80823)collected by London University,which includes brief annotations on the content of Chinese novels,and in the Chinese Miscellany,which touches upon the stylistic features of various Chinese literary genres.With the help of relevant historical materials,this article analyzes the generation mechanism of Morrison’s Chinese literary concepts,and holds that one of them is restricted by the ethical ideas of Christianity,and prefers the works of moral innocence in Chinese literary works.On the other hand,it has a strong practical nature.The need to translate and preach the Bible led to his preference for the style of historical novels represented by the San-kwŏ,and his relative indifference to Chinese poetry and drama.
