Chest impediment and heart pain is a disease characterized by symptoms such as chest distress and pain, severe cases involving pain radiating to the back, shortness of breath, and difficulty lying flat due to labored breathing. In Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases,ZHANG Zhongjing utilized the therapeutic principle of sour-sweet harmonizing yin to create Shaoyao Gancao Decoction. This formula functions to astringe body fluids, nourish yin-blood,soften the liver to relieve spasms, and alleviate acute pain.In his book Beiji Qianjin Yao Fang·Heart·Chest Impediment,SUN Simiao created Qianhu Decoction for treating chest impediment by using the thought of sour-sweet harmonizing yin.Professor ZHANG Yan has conducted in-depth research on chest impediment and heart pain, emphasizing the sour-sweet harmonizing yin therapeutic approach. She highlights its clinical application in treating this condition, where the pairing of sour and sweet medicinal agents achieves effects such as nourishing yin, consolidating fluids, and relieving acute symptoms. This article summarizes Professor ZHANG Yan's clinical experience in applying this theory to manage chest impediment and heart pain.
