The base of the Quaternary System is formally definedfor the first time at the base of the Gelasian Stage asdefined by the Global Boundary-Stratotype Section andPoint(GSSP)at San Nicola,Sicily,Italy;the PleistoceneSeries is extended downwards to coincide with thebase the Gelasian Stage;accordingly,the GelasianStage is transferred from the Pliocene Series andNeogene System to the Pleistocene Series and QuaternarySystem.Ratification by the Executive Committee ofthe International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS)of these recommendations from the InternationalCommission on Stratigraphy(ICS)followed establishedprocedures of extended,open discussion and deliberationof submitted proposals,and formal voting by the relevantICS Subcommissions,the ICS Voting Membership,andthe IUGS EC.They are now established as globalstandards.
