Centering on M.G.Vassanji’s literary work And Home Was Kariakoo:A Memoir of East Africa, this paper focuses on the changing names, functions, and concepts of Kariakoo over time—from a place of slaves under Omani rule to an indigenous settlement under German rule, from a military labour base during the British takeover to a distribution centre for native African goods after independence—a transformation that reflects how the colonial foreign concept of“Carrier Corps”was transformed into the indigenous concept of“Kariakoo”.Analyzing the capital domain traces in And Home Was Kariakoo from the perspective of Qiaoyi-ology offers insights into the changes in market spaces in the postcolonial period and helps to interpret the identity issues of African diasporic populations within the English-speaking cultural world.Vassanji’s emphasis on a“multidimensional sense”reflects the“gradual”integration consciousness in the“changeable”context, highlighting the return of African identity awareness in the cultural domain.
