The Sunloudong site in Linzi district,Zibo,Shandong province is a small settlement outside the ancient capital of the Qi state.A fragment of a lead-glazed pottery lei was unearthed from the Warring States period ash pit H197 at the site. The other pottery wares from the same pit are dated to the late days of the middle Warring States period, while the pits that cut through H197 are dated to the late Warring States period. The lei fragment bears bands of stamped circles that resemble the decorations on proto-porcelain lei from the Yue culture area. The composition of the clay and the lead isotope ratios of the glaze confirm that the original vessel was produced within the Qi culture area.Based on the chronological context of the finds, material analysis, and technological features,it is believed that this fragment currently represents the earliest known example of lead-glazed pottery in China. This discovery is of significant value for studying the origin of lead-glazed pottery and the technological characteristics of Warring States handicrafts in Linzi.
