Basil's discussion of animals in his Homiliae in hexaemeron has been treated as a mere compilation of anecdotes and moral lessons for his readers.Beyond this stereotype, this lecture will argue for a strong association among Basil's discussion on animals, the philosophy of his time, and Jewish and Christian traditions before him.In light of the debate on animal intelligence between the Platonists and the Stoics,I will demonstrate how Basil has deployed Stoic language and framework to interpret the animality against the Platonic view, while simultaneously drawing upon the Christian creation theology. This lecture will further suggest that Basil's understanding of animality has been shaped by Philo and Origen. However,Basil has departed from these two predecessors by a modified Stoic position on animality, which testifies to an Early Christianity considerably more friendly towards animals than has been commonly perceived.
