Since the introduction of tobacco to China during the Ming dynasty, medical scholars across successive generations have progressively gained deeper insights into tobacco's addictive nature and its potential harm to human health, and have attempted to achieve smoking cessation through acupuncture and moxibustion. This paper meticulously reviews the understanding of smoking cessation and related acupuncture and moxibustion techniques documented in ancient Chinese medical texts, summarizing the core therapeutic principles of acupuncture and moxibustion for smoking cessation, such as clearing heat from the lungs and stomach, resolving phlegm and strengthening the spleen, promoting blood circulation to eliminate stasis, and soothing the liver to regulate qi,in order to provide theoretical basis and practical guidance for smoking cessation research. This study not only deepens the understanding of the mechanisms behind acupuncture and moxibustion for smoking cessation but also expands the approach to clinical diagnosis and treatment based on syndrome differentiation, thereby facilitating a more profound comprehension and application of acupuncture and moxibustion in smoking cessation. This provides a new perspective and direction for subsequent research and practice.
