In traditional European children’s literature, growth is described as the dynamic developing process of children from innocence to experience,in which the contradiction between the unique value of individuals and social conventions should be properly balanced. However,in striving to escape the smothering control and influence of European culture and to construct its own national identity, the United States has planted the spirit of rebellion and self-examination in its children’s literature.Children usually question the values and norms of the adult world.Twenty-first century American children’s literature further expands this rebellious spirit and highlights children’s subjectivity and identification as its most prominent theme.Dystopian children’s literature constructs an imaginary space not restricted by secular standards,in which children become the hope and power to construct a new world.Children begin to recognize their identity in the context of multiculturalism, accepting their uniqueness and realizing their national identity.Faced with a series of changes, children also begin to re-recognize the subjectivity of self-identity in the multicultural context, acknowledging their national identity while accepting their own unique attributes.
