As American Indian studies evolves, there is an increasing need to assess its status in terms of academic conventions, knowledge system and disciplinary structure. However, the effort to systematize this rather contested field of knowledge constitutes a project with high stakes, the most serious of which being the debate surrounding the identity discourse of tribal communities. Issues concerning knowledge formation, discipline construction, and institutionalization of the field are taut with political tension which determines its future development. The present paper addresses three issues: the discursive formation of American Indian Studies as an academic discipline, factionalization of the field and its problems, and, the shift of research focus and new trends in American Indian studies.
