Nocturnes:Five Stories of Music and Nightfall(hereinafter referred to as Nocturnes)is Kazuo Ishiguro's only collection of short stories. It dissects the cause and mechanism of the phenomenon of artistic heteronomy and the loss of artists in the consumer society dominated by a market-oriented economy, and explicates Ishiguro's concern about the fate of art and artists in a consumer society.Unable to withstand the ordeal and the temptation brought by consumer society, the artists are either forced to succumb to the market mechanism or actively collude with it.As a result, their artistic activities become profit-driven commodity activities and are dominated by consumer demand and the law of supply and demand. In Ishiguro's eyes, the vast majority of artists are willing to go with the flow and demean themselves as"artisans",losing their artistic goals and their qualification as social consciences.
