It apparently has become a noteworthy orientation in cross-border ethnic studies to take the“cross-border”positioning as the research perspective, and to observe and deeply describe the multi-faceted“cross-border behavior”,intending to illustrate the daily life of cross-border ethnic groups in specific situations.Focusing on Hekou,a border port city in Yunnan Province,China, this study presents the cross-border livelihood activities of Vietnamese border residents in China through an in-depth description and analyzes their new livelihoods as well as the living spaces formed by them in the local area.In the article, the Vietnamese who make a living in Hekou are called“Vietnamese immigrants”.They are active in multiple living spaces jointly constructed by geographical boundaries, social boundaries, and cultural boundaries. In another sense, the work, communication, and daily life of“Vietnamese immigrants”represent a kind of social and cultural form of globalization. This study examines the livelihood networks constructed by these“Vietnamese immigrants”in both physical space and cyberspace, and moreover explores the formation of cross-border livelihoods and new living spaces among them, thus extending the relevant discussion of intercultural communication. The study investigated the livelihood activities of Vietnamese migrants pertaining to all aspects of life and presents a picture of transnational livelihoods in terms of their livelihood choices, workplaces, and life structures. It is found that the Vietnamese are embedded in a specific economic, social, and cultural network,of which the social network is connected by employment experience as the focus of their lives. In addition,it appears“Vietnamese immigrants”and the local people of Hekou are linked together by various activities of daily living, such as social, economic, and political relations,as well as cultural, interpersonal network, and technological links. From this complex relationship between Vietnamese migrant workers and local people,we can see that both sides pursue favorable living spaces and opportunities for co-existence and co-prosperity,intending to maintain the continued operation of the transnational livelihood network. After initially facing this new livelihood environment, over time“Vietnamese immigrants”have been gradually developing a set of survival strategies to adapt to the transnational livelihood environment, including a cooperation strategy, competition strategy, and intermediary strategy.“Vietnamese newcomers”not only create new opportunities for survival but also expand the transnational livelihood network through a dual flow of online and offline.Based on the above analysis, the research draws the following conclusions:1)Cross-border livelihood can be understood as a vicinal movement resulting from individual choices of Vietnamese border inhabitants, geography, and kinship relations of their transnational livelihood network. The transnational livelihood system formed by such regional flow and its practice processes can reveal more about the common cultural basis and dialogue space behind it.;2)the Internet may create new cross-border living spaces, and the embeddedness and everyday existence of media technology has shown to become an important driving force for the continuous enrichment and extension of cross-border living spaces;3)the process of globalization is not one of de-localization,but one in which locality is redefined in a new relational system;and 4)in the study of cross-border flows,it is of significance and value to incorporate the analysis dimension of mobility and symbiosis into the study of cross-border living spaces.
