Terrorist, John Updike’s post-9/11 novel, has been regarded by many critics to be a work written upon the occasion of 9/11. This paper argues that by means of narrating a Muslim young man’s attempt at terrorist violence, Updike explores the logic of the relationship between the US marginalized groups’ anxieties surrounding identity and domestic terrorism, examines the national identity crisis of the U.S., and advocates a mode of national moralization, with the aim of strengthening the national consciousness of the citizens and avoiding the national security risks brought about by political division.Updike’s investigation into the issue of American national identity in the post-9/11 era ref lects his 21st century ethical concerns.
