"Cao’s Clothes out of Water",Cao Zhongda’s style of figure painting in which the clothing of Buddhist statues appears to be sticking to the bodies of figures as if they just come out of water,is a renowned technique of Buddhist paintings in the Chinese art history. It is a pity that such figure paintings did not survive;therefore,Buddhist statues of this kind are usually used to explain the style of"Cao’s Clothes out of Water".However, instead of a statue style,it is a painting style, according to art history. This paper,by sorting out relevant Buddhist statues and frescoes, puts forwards the idea that sketches of the Cao style appeared in Kucha and were spread to China through exchanges during the Northern Dynasty(439-581),and that between 555 and 577,artist Cao Zhongda fused painting techniques in Kucha and painting traditions of the Southern Dynasty(420-589)into his own style of"Cao’s Clothes out of Water".
