Rome set up the nation based on agriculture. There exists relationship between the development of agriculture and physical geography. There are many hills in Italy, and the Romans planted different kinds of crops according to local conditions. The climate of Italy is typically Mediterranean, the warm and moist climate and ample rain falling play an important role in the production of agriculture. The classification of soils and their suitability for different crops were also important for Roman farmers, and these were the results of trial and error of generations of practical farmers. The classical writers were enthusiastic in the praise of their geography,so we can say that the Italian climate belongs to the typical Mediterranean in some ways and it makes agriculture flourish to a certain extent.
