The Chengtian Gate, the south gate of the Taiji Palace in the Tang Chang’an City, was originally built in the Sui Dynasty when it was named Guangyang Gate at first. It had been renamed several times before it was finally decided to be called Chengtian Gate. The gate was in use until the end of the Tang Dynasty. The Chengtian Gate served as the main entrance of the Palace City from the Sui Dynasty with the ritual functions. The basic study on the Chengtian Gate, and even the Taiji Palace was relative weak in the past.A preliminary survey has been put forward on the layout and the structure of the Chengtian Gate in this paper by analyzing the number of the gateways, the shape of the que-gate in pairs, the way that the que-gate tower and the gate abutment connect, and so on.It can be confirmed that the Chengtian Gate is the first city gate comprising of combined architectural structures, which creates a city gate construction pattern that the gate abutments, the wing towers and the que-gate towers are connected by the flying corridors. Moreover,it is also the first city gate that shows the form of three que-gate towers.
