The die set shear that is differnet from general flying shear is introduced. The structure of APC (automatic position control) system is given, the APC algorithms of controller is deduced. The waveforms of the blade velocity and position and the theory of reference signal production, as well as the path of hot strip are given. In practice, the tolerance of cut in length is very small (less than +1 mm) and the edge of cut work piece is almost perfectly smooth. The APC system of the die set shear presented was put into operation on a hot strip steel mill of Benxi Steel.
