Tangka is a kind of Tibetan styled paintings on cloth, silk and brocade, usually served as the temple banner. In the early 20th century, P. K. Kozlov, a Russian geographer, excavated and sacked quite a few paintings from the Town of Heishui, known in Russian as the Town of Khara Khoto, in Ejina Banner, Inner Mongolia, China. From then on, the paintings have been collected in the Ermitazh (or Hermitage) Museum in Russia. This paper first counts up the number of these paintings collected in the museum, and then gives a brief introduction to the studies on tangka by Russian scholars from the pre-Soviet to the post-Soviet periods, in nearly a century. Furthermore, a review is made on the range and methodology of tangka studies by European and American scholars in the past 50 years, especially in this past decade. At the same time, the paper made a review on the tangka studies in China, with a conclusion that the domestic study on the Tibetan styled arts, including tangka, still remains a domain needed to be developed by scholars.
