Submerged biofilter system was used to investigate the feasibility of biological pretreatment for surface water entering into the Guanting Rreservoir. The biochemical mechanism of each biofilter was analyzed in detail. Heuristic study on aerobic denitrification for surface water was also conducted and nitrogen removal rate of 29% was achieved under hydraulic loading of 4?m 3/(m 2·h). Aerobic denitrification provided a novel technology of biological nitrogen removal for surface water with low carbon/nitrogen ratio.
