In order to determine the associations between metabolic deterioration of retired elite female players and joint health status, 19 retired and 12 current elite female players were recruited for this study. After an overnight fasting, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed for all participants, and their fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were tested. The joint health status of hip and knee in both current and retired players were determined by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)joint health questionnaire. It was found that retired players have significantly greater body mass index (BMI), glucose area under the curve (GAUC), fasting blood glucose, hs-CRP and HbAlc levels, along with higher WOMAC joint function aspect scores compared to current players. Moreover, WOMAC joint stiffness was positively associated with fasting blood glucose level. However, the WOMAC overall score and individual aspects showed no association with serum hs-CRP levels. It was concluded that retired female players with impaired glycemic control, hyperglycemia and obesity were associated with declined joint health status. The results suggest that metabolic deterioration in retired female players may be associated with impairments in joint health and functions.
