This paper deals with a green-tea merchant, by the name" Tianxing",of Wuyuan, Anhui in late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Tianxing's family supplied the East India Company high-quality green teas for more than seventy years, through the hands of the Canton Hong merchants. The merchant in question is the grandson of the founder of the firm.He himself had stood in that business for more than fifty years at the time of his failure. Biography of merchants and history of trading firms are generally difficult to avail, but Tianxing's case gives use a vivid rare sample. By intensively exploring the archives kept in the British Library and the National Archives, London, this paper elaborately reconstructs the story of Tianxing's insolvency and also provides interpretations for it. In order to look into the issue in depth, background knowledge, like the ways of tea manufacturing, transportation, and distribution, etc., is duly included in the narration.
