The Qilü verse (eight-line seven-syllable Chinese metrical verse) underwent an evolution from its origin in Southern Dynasty, emergence in early Tang Dynasty, stalemate in high Tang Dynasty through the mature and formation in Dali Reign. In the Southern Dynasty, there were only sporadic Qilü verses. After the period of Emperor Wu Zetian and Zhongzong Reign, there emerged a sharp increase of the metrical verses. However, Qihi verses written in the high Tang period were not very consistent with the metrical requirements. The Qilü verses written in Dali Reign period are much more metrically conforming, which formed the final frame of the verse. Though Du Fu was a poet in high Tang period, his Qilü verses were most written in his late years, very close to the period of Dali Reign. Hence those works can be regarded as part of Dali poems. The origin of Qilti dated back to a new style featured in seven-syllable in one rhyme, rather than the seven-syllable in several rhymes.
