"The Pear Stories"is a nonverbal film of a simple plot produced by a team led by the American linguist Wallace Chafe in 1970 s. After viewing the film 20 English speaking and 20 Chinese speaking participants were asked to narrate what they had seen in the film, thereby forming 20 English oral narratives and 20 Chinese narratives,in both of which a lot of cohesive words were used. Cohesive words in English and Chinese "Pear Stories"demonstrate both similarities and differences in terms of category, position and function, which also reflects the universality and individuality of language.
