The purpose of the study is to reconstruct rural settlement system of Changshou district of Chongqing City based on the spatial interaction analysis, and provide references for the planning and comprehensive improvement of rural settlement. Method employed is to improve gravity model for estimating the interacted gravity value between rural settlement and county towns, and establish indicator system for the "power of rural residential field" to assess the developmental strength of rural settlement over aspects such as natural environment and economic development. The results indicate that 1 )the interacted gravity values of 223 rural settlements were between 0.21--52.32, which were classified into local urbanization type (including 16 rural settlements) and non-urbanization type (including 207 rural settlements)according to Jenks natural breaks method. 2)The 207 non-urbanization type rural settlements were divided into three types including central village, basic village and transitive village based on the "power of the residential field" with the help of hierarchical cluster analysis. The three ranks of rural settlements were more reasonable for developing. The results show that the spatial interaction theory is suitable for revealing the connection between the relevant factors of town-rural settlement, the study broaden the thinking of rural settlement system reconstruction from the viewpoint of spatial structure optimization.
