The sodium-taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) is a member of the solute carrier 10 (SLC10) family and plays an important role in enterohepatic circulation of bile acids. The expression of NTCP is influenced by many factors such as cytokines, the intracellular concentration of bile acids, and hormone levels. SNPs of NTCP gene are related to ethnicity. NTCP has been identified as a functional receptor for the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This finding has provided new targets and strategies for research and development of anti-HBV drugs and has changed the direction and manner of research into HBV.
