Jokes are the humorous words said or written. This paper analyzes English jokes in conversations. Through the analysis of the structure, it's found that once a discourse has the indispensable part(which is called 'the linguistic core','the locus in language'or 'the punch line')to bring about humor, it is a joke. The violation of the four maxims of 'Cooperative Principle'often causes humor. As for the understanding of the humor in jokes, Relevance Principle provides a model:the interaction between A's hypothesis and B's information may produce the inference which is, to A, the product of optimal relevance; however, B's other information provided later proves the inference wrong. The wrong inference is the root of humor.
