Toxoplasma gondii infection may cause severe damage especially in immunocompromised pateints, while the infection rate of T. gondii is high in patients with autoimmune diseases. The positive rates of T. gondii antibody are as high as 10%-80% in Europe countries while it is 0.3%-10.0% in China. There are controversial views as to the relation between autoimmune diseases and the Toxoplasma infection. In many diseases, especially in autoimmune diseases, the positive rate of anti-Toxoplasma antibody is much higher than that in other diseases or healthy controls. So it is assumed that T. gondii infection is associated closely with the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. However, some studies indicated that T. gondii might protect the mice against the progress of autoimmune disease or prolong the survival of mice. The mechanism of T. gondii infection and the relationship between T. gondii infection and autoimmune diseases were reviewed in this paper.
