The purification of the extensin from carrot callus, and the electropho-retic feature, amino acid components as well as electron microscope observation of the purified extensin are reported in this article. Carrot calli have only one component of extensin in CM-cellulose column chromatography. Its electrophoretic feature is similar to that of extensin-1 from wounded carrot root tissue; The ratio of hydroxy-proline/serine in the extensin is about 4/1 (hydroxyproline 42.1 mol%, serine 12.8 mol%). In addition, the extensin is a typically rodlike molecule under electron microscope.
