Water treeing is one of the main causes of premature breakdown of the polymeric insulation in HV power cable.In this paper,the effect of a water treeing retardant of ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer(EAA) on polyethylene (PE) is studied.We modified the PE by blending with different a little EAA,and cooled off the specimens in three ways,then tested for water treeing in the PE under different AC electric fields for different times,tensile strength and elogation. Finally, the optimum content of EAA to retard water treeing was determined.The results also show that crystalline morphology has some effects on retarding water treeing in PE,and its possible mechanism is discussed.
