The Chinese character de was originally used to indicat e “binding the head of cattle for sacrifice ritual”, when it was first used in Zhou Dynasty to accolade the victory of the conqueror. De was given the meaning of universal morality, and the political and legal concept of supreme morality was brought up in the West Zhou Dynasty based on which the confucienists arisen during the late Spring-Autumn period created their theory of 'rule of morality'. The evolution of the concept of de was an expression of the great social change at that time.
