The size of flower is determined by both genetic and environmental factors in nature. The combined selective pressure from pollinators, predators and stress affects the floral organ morphology and its reproductive capacity, which promotes the evolution of floral organ size by genotype selection. Recently, progress has been made on the mechanism research of floral organ size reg·Lation. Several genes which affect the cell prolifera- tion and cell expansion have been isolated and proved to be involved in floral organ size reg·Lation at the cell·Lar level in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this review, we focus on the evolution of floral organ size, its biological significance, and summarize the research progress of its reg·Lation mechanism in A. thaliana.
