According to their prevalent applications, LED displays can be generally divided into three categories: full color displays, displays for public information release and display in traffic field. Each category has its own distinctive technical features, which are covered from its development in history, current status as well as its future direction. The article especially lists technological challenges each category will be confronted with. While proposing remedies, the author calls for serious efforts to elevate the technical level of the whole industry.
