Psoriasis is a chronic T cell-mediated inflammatory skin disease characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation. At present, the pathogenesis is not yet clarified. It is considered that psoriasis is a genetic disease resulting from the interaction between genetic factors, immunological factors, environmental factors, obesity, and so on. Recently, clinical observations have suggested that obesity is more prevalent in psoriatic patients than in healthy individuals, and treating obesity may improve psoriasis, hinting that obesity is closely correlated with psoriasis. Previous studies revealed that leptin (an adipokine modulating body metabolism) and its receptor were highly expressed in psoriatic lesions, and might be associated with epidermal hyperproliferation. Hence, leptin may serve as a molecular linker between psoriasis and obesity.
