An Empirical Study on Applying CBI to Business English Teaching of Tertiary Education

摘要 本项研究关注了商务英语专业初始阶段内容依托教学实施的效果,考察其对学生英语语言技能和语言知识发展的影响。研究采用传统教学班级与实行内容依托教学班级进行对比的方法,发现实施内容依托教学对学生学习英语的动机产生了影响。为英语专业课程改革及系统开展内容依托教学提供了支持。 Content-Based Instruction (CBI) has received considerable publicity as a new paradigm in foreign language teaching practice. This study tentatively investigated the efficacy of CBI in facilitating Chinese Business English majors' acquisition of English in the tertiary institution at the fundamental stage. A comparative study was made between the control group with conventional college English teaching method and treatment group with CBI. The findings of the research revealed that the students in the treatment group were more highly motivated and more active in English to communicate. Plus, the treatment group gained higher language proficiency as compared to the control group in languages skills. It can be concluded that CBI is an effective means to improve English learners' language competence. Meanwhile, this study confirmed that CBI does not apply to lower intermediate learners.
