Generally speaking, "You'd better" is used to recommend someone to do something. But in most cases it is not properly used by Chinese users because it is not stated clearly in our dictionaries and grammar books. From the research and analysis on foreign literature, in fact it is used to give a strong recommendation with the implication of bad consequences, a warning and even a treat. So the situation and context should be paid attention to when it is used.
