In order to the effects of different levels of boron supplemented in drinking water on the biochemical index and antioxidant capacity of serum in rats. One hundred and ninety two clean level SD rats were randomly divided into six groups:control group and experiment group Ⅰ , Ⅱ , Ⅲ, IV and V Treated rats drank the water supplemented with 40,80,160,320 and 640 mg/L bo- ron. At the 30 d and 60 d of experiment period, 16 rats (n=8,male=female) from each group were selected and the serum samples were obtained. Then serum biochemical indexes (cholester- ol, glucose, total protein, ALP, ALT, AST, Caz+ , Mg^2+ and P) and the antioxidant capacity were detected. The results were as follows : (1) compared with the control group, the mean weight of the female rats in group Ⅰ and Ⅴ ,and the male rats in group Ⅰ , Ⅲ and V were significantly de- creased at 65 d (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01) ;the average daily gain (ADG) and Lee's index of male and female rats in group Vwere significantly decreased at 65 d and 95 d(P〈0.05 or P〈0.01);the MB and stem length of male and female rats in experiment group V were significantly decreased at 95 d (P〈0.01). (2) In the 65 day-old rats, the level of serum cholesterol,ALT and magnesium ingroup Ⅲ ,the blood calcium in group Ⅳ ,the glucose,ALP and calcium in groupV were all signifi- cantly decreased (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01);in the 95 day-old rats, the level of serum cholesterol and calcium in group Ⅲ, serum cholesterol, calcium and phosphorus in group Ⅳ,the serum glucose, ALT,AST,calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in group V were also significantly decreased (P 〈0.05 or P〈0.01);but the level of serum calcium in group Ⅱ , serum cholesterol and AST in groupV at 65 d,and the level of serum cholesterol in groupVwere significantly increased at 95 d (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01). (2) In the 65 day-old rats, the concentration of MDA in group Ⅳ and Ⅴ were significantly increased (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01), and the activity of SOD, CAT, GSH-Px in group V were significantly decreased (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01) ;in the 65 day-old rats, the concentra- tion of MDA and the activity of GSH-Px in groupV ,the activity of SOD in group Ⅱ-Ⅳ were sig- nificantly increased, and the concentration of MDA in group Ⅲ , the activity of GSH-Px in group Igwere significantly decreased (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01). The results indicated that the boron sup- plemented in distilled water with from 40 to 320 mg/L could have obvious and different effects on the serum antioxidant capacity and the concentration of cholesterol, glucose, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium of serum in 65 and 95-day-old rats, and have some influences on the serum protein levels and the serum enzyme activity of rats,in which the effects on serum antioxidant capacity was especially obvious. But the boron showed obvious harmful and even toxic effects on the bio- chemical indexes and the antioxidant capacity of serum in rats supplemented with 640 mg/L of bo- ron. In this circumstance, the body metabolism of cholesterol, lipid, sugar and serum ions displayed disorder, and the antioxidant capacity decreased obviously.
