The southwestern Henan region was situated between the two vast prehistoric cuhural areas distributed respectively in the midde valley of the Yangtze River and that of the Yellow River. Its prehistoric archaeological cultures were distinctly influenced by those of the surrounding areas in the course of their development. The prehistoric culture in this region can be divided into five evolutionary stages and two areas of cultural development—the Nanyang Basin and the lower Danjiang River valley. The first stage consists of two phases, bears clear traces of influence from the Central Plains in its main cultural elements and belongs to the system of the Peiligang culture. The second stage embraces three phases,i.e.the early Baligang,Xiawanggang and late Baligang types, presents strong influence from the Central Plains and Guanzhong region in the majority of its cultural components, and belongs to the system of Yangshao culture. The two stages belong to the prehistoric cultural system in the middle Yellow River valley. The third stage can be divided into two phases, with the principal cultural elements coming from the Yangtze- Hanshui Plain, which shows it to be the product of the northward spread of the Qujialing culture and belong to the Qinglongquan Ⅱ type of the latter. The fourth stage also comprises two phases, possesses mainly cultural elements deriving from the Qinglongquan Ⅱ type of the Qujialing culture, developed synchronously with the culture in the Yangtze- Hanshui Plain, and is represented by the Qinglongquan Ⅲ type of the Shijiahe culture. These two stages belong to the prehistoric cultural system of the middle Yangtze River valley. The fifth stage is represented by the Baligang Ⅳ culture in the Nanyang Basin and the Luanshitan culture in the lower Danjiang River valley, which were chiefly formed by the components evolving from the Qinglongquan Ⅲ type and rather strongly influenced by the contemporary archaeological cultures in the Guanzhong region and Central Plains respectively, and belonged to the prehistoric cultural system of the middle Yellow River valley.
