The third season of excavation at the Daxi site was conducted between October 1975 andJanuary 1976.According to stratigraphical evidence and preliminary analysis of archaeo-logical finds, the site can be divided into two stages.A total of 133 tombs were opened, ofwhich 69 belonged to the early stage and 64 to the late stage.Of these tombs, one(Tomb M121)contained the skeletons of a mother and her son,and130 cons(?)sted of individual burials in narrow shafts no bigger than the corpse. Most of thedead were buried with their head toward the south;the rest with their head toward the northor the west.No coffins were found. The dead in the early-stage tombs were usually buried in a supine and flexed position, while those in the late-stage tombs in a supine and extended position. In a few tombs of bothstages the dead were laid in a prone position or on their side. The funeral objects were mainly placed on the upper part of the skeletons. Those fromthe early-stage tombs were dominated by tools such as stone axes, adzes and chisels, bone awlsand pottery or stone whorls.Fewer pottery articles were discoverd.Among the ornamentsthe most popular were various types of stone earrings. The artifacts unearthed from the late-stage tombs were characterized by the abundanceof pottery——both round-bottomed and ring-footed bowls, jars, dou food vessels, plates, bottles and cauldrons, scarcity of tools and greater variety of ornaments—necklaces and bra-celets of jade or stone.
