The controversial focus of the Devonian—Carboniferous boundary in China is the age of the Shaodong Formation in central Hunan province. Wang Chengyuan and Ziegler (1982), and Ji Qiang (1984) had discovered about 13—22 genera and species (included subspecies, new species and uncertain species) of conodonts from the Shaodong Formation and Menggongao Formation (part) of central Hunan. Most of the conodonts are uppermost Devonian to Lower Carboniferous elements. The so-called Upper Devonian typical conodont species include Icriodus (?)tatus, Bispathodus costatus, Protognathodus m(?)ischneri, Spathognathodus crassidentatus, S. stabilis etc. Of these, the first species might also be present from the S. praesulcata zone to the S. sandbergi zone from Omolon, USSR (Shilo et al., 1984); the last species has been discovered from the Upper Devonian to the Upper S. crenulata zone in the Rocky Mountains, USA, and FRG and the Z zone in Britain. The range of P. meischneri is from. the uppeimost part of the Upper Devonian to the upper Gattendorfia subinvolute zone of the Lower Carboniferous in FRG, It has been generally recognized by the conodont researchers that B. costatus is distributed from the uppermost pare of the Upper Devonian to the S. sulcata zone the world over, but it was discovered from the Hannibal Formation in Missouri, USA (Ziegler, 1975); the S. crassidentatus occurs from the upper K zone to Z zone in Britain (Rhodes et al., 1969). On the basis of the conodont fauna stated above, and its associated corals Ceriphyllum-Caninophyllum patulum Assemblage-Zone or Ceriphyllum elegantum A.-Zone and Caninia dorlodoti A. Zone (Wu et al., 1981), the authors consider that the Shaodong Formation is still of Early Carboniferous age, just as E. Poty (1986) pointed out: 'the so-called Etroeungt fauna. from the Shaodong Formation (South China) described by Wu Wangshi et al.(D81) might be rather of Lower (and Middle?) Tournaisian age'.
The present paper deals with the stratigraphic correlation of the Yanguanian in South China. with the Tournaisian in other regions abroad (Table.1).
