Objective To investigate the CD117 and Smoothelin expressions in the colonic tissues from patients with severe slow transit constipation (STC), and explore its possible role in the pathogenesis of STC. Methods We Used envision immunohistochemical staining and detected the distribution and expression levels of CD117 and Smooth- elin in the colon of 30 STC patients and 20 cases in the control group. Results CD117 was mainly distributed in the submucosa and muscular layer. Smoothelin was mainly distributed in the colonic submucosa muscular layer, circular muscular layer and longitudinal muscular layer. The semi -quantitative results showed that the expressions of CD117 and Smoothelin in STC colonic tissue were significantly reduced compared with the control group. Conclusion The expressions of CD117 and Smoothelin were down - regulated in the colon of patients with STC. The present study indi- cates that interstitial cells of Cajal(ICC) and mooth muscle cell may be involved in the pathogenesis of STC.
