SF 6 is the electric power industry’s preferred gaseous dielectric (nonconductor) used in high voltage insulator or arc interrupter of circuit breakers, switchgear and other electric equipment. Indentified as one of the six gases specifically mentioned for worldwide regulation in the recent international global warming agreements prepared in Kyoto, Japan, interest in alternatives to SF 6 is heightened for some utilities. In a recent Technical Note of National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST). possible substitution of gas mixtures were identified and the limit of the choices of acceptable gases were discussed.
