Objective To investigate the efficacy and side effects of concurrent chemoradiotherapy and sequential chemoradiotheraphy for locally advanced cervical cancer. Methods 80 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer were randomized into Group A (radiotherapy alone, n = 24), Group B (sequential chemoraditheraphy, n = 33) and Group C (concurrent chemoradiotherapy, n = 23). The efficacy and side effects in the three groups were observed and compared. Results There were no significant differences among the three groups in the effective rate (P 〉 0.05). The complete remission rates in Group B and C were 66.67% and 78.26%, which were significantly higher than that in Group A (33.33%) (P 〈 0.05). The 3-year survival rates were 54.5% and 65.2%, which were also higher than that in Group A (33.3%) (P 〈 0.05). There were more obvious side effects as digestive tract and bone marrow depression in Group B and C. Conclusion Chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced cervical cancer can significantly improve the patients' survival rate, but can induce more severe side effects, which the patients could tolerate.
